My Story

Who is Emma?

‘People think that stories are shaped by people, in fact it is the other way around’ – Terry Pratchett

My story

‘I’ve had a very colourful life’, is about the extent to which I go into my past these days, in the main. I no longer feel the need to spew out any number of dramatic and traumatic events that hav e punctuated my life since an early age in the name of ‘sharing my lived experience’, to rooms full of people.

My close friends often tell me I ‘should’ write a book. Maybe I will someday, if I feel drawn to and if I feel it would be of genuine benefit to others for me to do so. Right now, such a book would likely damage relationships that have been repaired in the process of dealing with the past. Hence, I do not share all event or details in the public domain. Anyway, I can guarantee you, truth is far stranger than fiction, as they say 😉

The fact that I have no desire to write such a tome, or feel the need for cathartic release is, in my view, testament to the fact that traumas have been successfully dealt with and I no longer identify as a ‘survivor’, ‘victim’, alcoholic’, ‘adult child of…’, abused’, ‘mentally ill’, or any other of the labels I could add to my resume of adverse life events.

The conundrum here, is how, then, do I convey to you that I have the adequate life experience to help you to navigate the world of trauma, stress, adversity, and challenge, to come out the other side at the life you always dreamed.

Well, I guess there is a degree of trust built in and I do share bits of my story in the private groups, courses, and one to one coaching sessions, if and when they are appropriate and relevant to the topic. My bio refers to ‘personal stories of recovering from trauma, alcoholism, and the effects of psychiatric treatment’ – read into that what you will.

I used to think that the sharing of personal stories was the most powerful way to help someone. To a certain extent, I still do consider it important BUT there is a huge caveat. There are ways of telling a personal story of adversity that are healthy, and ways that are unhealthy. The latter can do more harm than good. Trauma, constantly revisited and retold, becomes rehearsal of trauma, and that begets more trauma both by retraumatising ourselves and traumatising those who are listening and that is harmful.

So, take it from me – I have had a very colourful life. I have ‘overcome’, ‘recovered’, ‘resolved’, ‘succeeded’, ‘aced it’,, or whichever terminology gives you like that gives you confidence in me. I might be ‘amazing’, ‘awesome’, and ‘inspirational’, if it helps – I don’t know. To me, now, I am simply a woman who has done whatever is in front of her to be done and just gets on with life.

I have clung for dear life and kept my head above the stormy waters when necessary though sometimes have almost drowned in the process, I have worked very hard across all domains of my life to be who I am now, I have kept a clear vision in my mind at all times regardless of what was going to shit all around me and I have kept going no matter what, always getting back up when I was flung over, even if I couldn’t see the floor. I have always found hope (which I define as the constant expectation that things will change for the better), even in the most unusual of place. And now, I feel some of the most consistent and comforting feelings that I have ever felt, and which most people take for granted – contentment, peace, calmness, punctuated increasingly more often by awe (have you seen where I live?! J ), joy (as I follow my passions), inspiration (I have some crazy ideas for the future and wonderful opportunities coming towards me), intimacy (I have some wonderful friends and powerful relationships in my life), and freedom (I feel the limitlessness of being able to be and do whatever I choose whenever I choose).

So, if any of that resonates with you then perhaps we are compatible and can work together. I would love to accompanying you along your journey to the life you always dreamed! 😊
